I hope to do a post mortem about this project and my share some insight into what my plans were for Warhammer content soon, as well as support Sartosa with free periodic "DLC" pages that add more quests and content.

Pirate Princes of Sartosa Campaign Map Preview 2

I previewed the layout of the campaign map for Pirate Princes back in February, and talked about using elements of the Dreadfleet game. The plan is still in motion and I'm here to show how it's coming along! It's a pretty big part of the project (and super fun!) - I expect to be done with it next week. Part of it is in the shade in the picture so excuse the poor photography, but it is really bright and I'm excited!

Pirate Princes of Sartosa Campaign Map Preview

It's a beautiful Saturday morning here in southern California, and I'm just hung over enough to make staring at a computer screen painful so I worked on this preliminary mock-up of the map for Sartosa.




This was just to see if I had enough Mighty Empires tiles to get the job done and get an idea for how the cities, ports, and other landmarks relate to each other spatially. So far so good!

I'm super excited to work on this map because it's going to be a really fun project and I have some big ideas for the final product, including cannibalizing an entire box of Dreadfleet for all it's little rocks and other mini-terrain.

An added bonus is that once I have absolutely destroyed the contents of the Dreadfleet game, the ships will be great race-specific counters for the campaign, since there is a travel by ship mechanic that can be used to get around the island!

Army Painter Strong Tone Quickshade test

I did some tests of the Army Painter Strong Tone quickshade this weekend in preparation for doing an entire Orcs & Goblins army with the stuff. Using some spare Battle for Skull Pass minis that were laying around, I began by doing a quick and clean 30 minute paint job on a Night Goblin shaman consisting of base colors and highlights.



My palette usually consists of very bright colors so my main concern was that green, yellow, and purple wouldn't work with the quickshade, or just look like crap. I did the highlights at this stage so they'd pop through the shader.



I didn't want to full-on dip the model into the can of shader because that seemed wasteful and messy so I gently applied the shader onto the model using an old rounded brush.  


I really got a feel for how the shader behaves at this stage, you want to push the pigment into nooks and brush it off from any areas that you'd like to look a little cleaner.  


After the dip was completely dry, I finished the model off with some Testor's Dullcote. Here are the results of some testing -
                               

 


Overall the quickshade is really easy to use, and solid results are very possible with a bit of highlighting and a good matte finish. Im not done experimenting for just the right shade of purple that Im going for, but doing an entire army this way is going to be a piece of piss.
